The first strawberries.

The May strawberries came in this weekend. Half a pint from the June-bearer patch, eaten warm off the plant before they made it to the kitchen.

There's no comparison to a grocery-store strawberry. None. Grocery store berries are engineered for shipping and shelf life — they are hollow and pale and taste like water. A homegrown Sparkle is red all the way through, small, and every one is like eating candy.

Netting goes on this week before the birds figure it out.
